Okay, It’s Hot…Hot…Hot…Oh, And Humid Too…

Well, I’ve fought writing anything about the hot weather here in Little Rock, AR…but I can’t stand it any longer…it’s like if I say something about it…it will get cooler???…I’m not that dumb, well, I live here, and in it, so that is debatable…but put that aside for a while…its just that I hope every night on the weather, they will say: “This unforgiving high pressure is finally moving east and we are in for a few days, at least, of cooler weather.”…I am constantly disappointed…they keep saying something like: “October is coming. Hang in there.”…what do they mean, “October is coming.”???…are they for real???…and then I remember last summer…it was the same…high 90’s everyday…then some 100’s and more…couldn’t they ever surprise me with an 89 sometime…so I know October is the cure, that is when things begin to change…but it is a long wait…”Brutal”, is the word that keeps coming back to me…”Our summers are brutal.”…the  builder of our house told me…Oh, I believed him…but it doesn’t do justice to what we experience day to day…

I remember the word “Brutal” is how I described our winters in Minnesota, to those newcomers to that wonderful state…I used to tell about the snow, the cold, the blizzards, the shoveling, the blowing snow and drifting…the “ice chunks” behind the wheels that would not come off until you put the car in the garage…and melt all over the garage floor…sand and water and dirt and salt…I remember all that…you know, I feel cooler just thinking about it…and the thought that we don’t worry about that any more in the winter…not even a jacket most of the time…makes me feel a tad better…

But wait a minute…it’s not that easy…I’m in an A/C house…drive an A/C car…but outside it is brutal…you just can’t believe it until you try it…open the door to take out the trash and it hits you like a blast furnace…and not only the heat of 99 or higher but also the dewpoint…it is always in the mid to high 70’s…don’t you think the weather man could say once during the summer: “The dewpoint will be a little lower tomorrow.”…but no, always in the tropical range…we might as well be in the Amazon Basin…it is uncomfortable…no, brutal…

We had a severe hail storm here in Little Rock the end of April…so everyone is getting new shingles put on their roofs…we will be in line to get ours on too…but all over this and adjoining neighborhoods people are getting new roofs put on…and as you look out the window of our A/C house or car…you see these men taking off and putting on new roofs…and yes, the heat index for them is over 100 every day as it is for us…and they work from 7 in the morning to dark…which is about 7 or 8…needless to say they are a “bit” younger than I…now they take breaks for water and rest, etc…it is amazing they can do that day after day…it’s hot, hot, hot…Judie has brought them watermelon a few times…they loved that…

So we are hot here…I think you have gotten that idea…are we getting used to it???…Nope…but we are more than fortunate for A/C…there are still some without it…that would truly be miserable…but we will endure…and will enjoy our life here…there is still so much beauty to behold here…and the weather…well, as I used to say in Minnesota…”Because I live here, I can complain.”…and since we live here…I guess I will complain…though you know, as I said in Minnesota and now here…I love it here…kinda like Paul when he wrote Philippians 4:11 “…for I have learned, in whatsoever STATE I am, therewith to be content.”…(Okay a cheap play on  words)…so bring on the heat…we are “content” and we love it so!!!…

  1. Slices of watermelon helps!

It’s been hot here too, and I was just musing today about how we get used to things- I’ve been hiking in the early morning hours, my shirt soaked to the skin, but it seems ‘normal’ to me now. Believe me, it didn’t feel that way at the beginning of this hot weather. August means indian summer is on the horizon…

    • It’s funny, in the odd kind of way, how we get “used” to the heat and humidity…I still hate when it is that hot and humid…and I will never lose that I suppose…but you are right, we get used to going about our business as usual…by the end of the day though, I am tired of it…so having some A/C is good for the soul…and go out again tomorrow to face that blast furnace…still, all in all, life is so good, I will put up with most anything to live it…
