Winter…After Christmas…Snow…I Look For Spring…

For someone who loves the Christmas season…and frankly loves Christmas and everything about it…this Christmas was something else…I told more that one person that this Christmas could be a very memorable one…you know, most of the time we can’t remember one Christmas from theChristmas 2012 other…but this Christmas started out with some things that made it different…will we remember it as memorable?…well, we will see…but one thing that makes it different was our Christmas Day Eve snow storm…

Little Rock, Arkansas is geographically in the Mid-South…which means that we have all four seasons…as I have said too many times, we have long hot summers, a long fall, a short winter andChristmas 2012 2 and long spring…overall it is a great climate…the summers are brutal…and long…June through September are very hot…but the rest of the year is very nice…heavens, last winter we didn’t have single snowflake…it was great, that is if you don’t want snow…we spent most of our years in Minnesota, so we have had our snow and cold…I can do without it…not that I hate snow, I don’t…it’s beautiful and I love Minnesota…but after about 6 months of snow and cold, I’ve had it…in Arkansas, snow comes once in a while and it lasts usually a day or so…in fact Christmas 2012 3today it is near 70…and it’s January 11th…so you see what I mean…not a snowflake of this snow is around…

But let’s go back to Christmas Day Eve…we got snow…they had been predicting it for days…and people here just love to get snow…so when it came the first few hours, fine…but then it just kept coming and coming…we got about 10-12 inches of snow…a record for sure…and I will attach pictures…but when snow keeps coming here…in Little Rock, they have 5 trucks with plows…let’s Christmas 2012 4put it this way…they do not clear the streets, even main roads…they wait for the weather to melt it…only this time ice came before the heavy snow…taking down thousands of branches and trees…telephone pole snapped and fell…hundreds of thousands were without power throughout this part of Arkansas…we were one of the many…

So here we were…without power…no heat…cloudy, no sun…it got cold…not like Minnesota but when your house gets to 50 degrees or lower…you get pretty cold…this went on for 4 days…we Minnesotans were not used to that…it might happen for a Christmas 2012 5few hours maybe…but 4 days?…our fireplace is gas…which gave us hope…but it starts with electricity and we couldn’t get it to start…(there is a way, we just didn’t know how)…they brought in over 5 thousand workers from all over the South to fix the power…they worked 24 hours a day…different shifts…they were wonderful…but when you have to clear thousands of trees and branches and then fix the wires, replace poles, etc…it takes time…lets say were were happy when the power came on…for some it took over a week to get power back…so when the Christmas 2012 6environmental activists say we need less coal for electric plants, etc…I think they should have visited during the blackout…and see if they really want to close all these plants…amazing…

We are back to some kind of normal…but there are lots of people still cleaning up…trees and limbs are piled along the roads…they Christmas 2012 7say it will take 200 days to just pick up the debris…so let me add some pictures of the snow…so beautiful…some of the trees down…and then some of the debris piles…what a memorableChristmas 2012 8 Christmas…I love it all…now that it is over…waiting now for spring…

Spring comes early here…I expect that there will be some signs of spring long before the debris is picked up…in fact early flowers will be coming in Pansies on porch 2012February…crocus, daffodils and others…of course we have pansies all winter long…some out on our porch in the back courtyard…but spring will come and I will welcome it…and will add some pictures that I have of daffodils that we will see in February…and other flowering bushes and flowers…can’t wait…in fact Spring is in the air…I can almost smell it…”up North” when Spring comes and the Daffodil Wye Mt 1frost comes out of the ground (we don’t have frozen ground here) there is a certain smell that comes with it on a warm day…sunshine and 55 degrees let’s say…no breeze and just standing still…there is a sweet aroma that comes out of the ground…it is warming up and it lets you know it is Spring…I love that aroma and that feeling of Spring…

But Spring here is different…though lots of things are the same…the warmth of the sun and the birds singing…the early flowers and the warm breeze…we get pollen that you can’t believe…it comes from all the trees around here…mostly the pines…it is all over everything…for about two weeks then we can really enjoy a couple of months of just beautiful weather…sometimes, like last year it went from February through most of June…all of it, beautiful Spring…

    • Connie…yup…believe it or not…we still have a bit of snow on the ground…we have to look for it but it’s there…55 and sunny today…and we see some buds on some trees and bushes…not leafing out yet…but in a few weeks…flowers first though…then the leaves…by the end of February we will have spring…and lots of it…when we lived in Minnesota…that was about the time we looked for anything that looked like an early spring…but we knew that there might be lots of snow and cold yet…March and April…but still we loved it in Minnesota…it always gave us something to complain about…that always feels good…have a great rest of the winter…and we will too…we had ice and snow just the other day…Monday, and that’s where the left over snow is from…but today makes up for it…Jim jE
