Rain…Rain…And More Rain…Flowers…And More Flowers…And Water…

Oh yes, I’m back…had a bit of a hiatus but now back…it seems like a long time away from this keyboard but it has only been a few days…maybe more than a few…but we are in the middle of a strong low pressure over Texas and a strong high pressure over Alabama…and we in Arkansas are stuck in the middle…they aren’t moving and won’t until Thursday or Friday…so we are suffer from rain and more rain…in Minnesota we could have 1, 2 or 3 inches of rain…and that would happen once in a while but here in the mid-south we can get steady rain for days…8, 9, 14 inches of rain at a time…or over a few days…like we are experiencing right now…here is a picture of our rain gauge when we got up this morning…overflowing at the 5 inch level…so we had more than 5 inches last night…and we are well on our way to 3 inches more today…it just keeps “training” over the same area…

In Minnesota, our weather was mostly west to east…not too much from the south…but here in Arkansas, we are at the mercy of the Gulf…and when the winds come from the south like they do often…we get all that moisture and it falls upon our heads…so there is water everywhere…the way the housing developments and towns are mapped out…they have drainage ditches, which turn into raging streams when it rains like this…some of them the size of a small river…and all running toward the Arkansas River…here is one picture from today that is behind our new fire station just being built…this reminds me of a stream running down the mountains in the Rockies…except when the rain stops it become a trickle of water…but it is true around Little Rock, there is very few places that are level…everything runs up or down…well, except water, it always runs down here too…and so on all the mountains and hills there is water…and it is all running down…like here in this picture…

But one thing is sure…spring is here…there are flowers, trees blooming and bushes blooming…today we drove around to see how high the water was in some of the streams and ditches…and found dogwoods in bloom in the middle of the woods…they are beautiful…so airy, almost floating in the air…a couple of pictures…here…

These are from near Jeremy’s Kroger store and the new bridge that they put across the stream there…

One more of the dogwoods back in the middle of the woods…I’m sure they were not planted…probably just volunteer dogwoods popping up as they do all over the mountains here around Little Rock…just beautiful…

But not just all around the up and down of the mountains but also in our little courtyard…our azaleas are out and blooming…they are encore azaleas…and bloom three times a year…approximately in March, then July and then in October and into November…just beautiful…so let’s show you two pictures of the the courtyard…there is one thing about the mid-south…the winters are wonderful…and short…and the fall and spring are long and great…now the summers are dreadful…it is still very beautiful and full of flowers and blooming things all summer long…but it is hot, beastly so…and if not for A/C I don’t know what people would do…or what they did do before A/C came along…they suffered…no doubt about that…

So that’s my story today…one that is wet but beautiful…I have enjoyed this day immensely…I can’t tell you why…I just don’t know, except to say it was one wonderful, interesting day…but you know, I love them all…have a great rest of the week…

  1. Welcome back, Jim!

Great photos! Love the dogwoods this time of year, I take plenty of pictures of them because they’re so delightful. The weather has been different this spring for sure- that’s a ton of rain you’re getting! When we get a couple of inches of rain in a storm system here in Ohio, it’s a pretty big deal. I can’t imagine having a foot!

    • Hi, W.S. good to hear from you, from Ohio…love your blog…it does bring joy to people who go there…we are drying out a bit after our rain…and now the flowers just explode in amount and color…some yards are full of different colors…well planned I’m sure…have a great spring…Jim E
