How About That…Butterflies…Dewpoint…Tickseed…And Stuff…

How about what, you ask…well, yesterday we had mid-90’s for temperature…today, a high of 74 with a dewpoint in the 40’s…now that is a perfect day…especially for Arkansas…the dewpoint yesterday was in the high 60’s or 70’s…and its been that way all summer…so maybe fall may be on the way…there will be lots of warm weather yet before fall really “falls”, if you know what I mean…if I were in Minnesota, we would be putting away the picnic table and chairs…any other outdoor stuff…hoses, etc…because cold weather is pretty much here for the winter…Oh, there can be some warm weather…”Indian Summer”, it’s called…and if and when that arrives it is beautiful…leaves falling, sun shining…cool, but still warm enough to go without a jacket…but Minnesotans know anything can happen this time of year…there was frost there last night…and most people in the Twin Cities woke up to frost on the roof…or as the saying goes, “Frost on the pumpkin”…in other words, very cool (cold) nights…but to Minnesotans, it is beautiful and having a fire in the backyard is wonderful…

But here in Little Rock…it was cool last night…a cold front came through from Canada…all the way down here…it’s the same one that came through Minnesota, Iowa and all the states north of us…for us, it is welcome…for others north of us it may be a wake-up call…winter is coming…they are all hoping that there “will be” a fall…because sometimes there “is no” fall…it goes from summer to winter…with very little fall…football can be played in very cold weather in the northern climes…some early season games are very nice..but toward the end of the season it can be very cold…heavy coats and gloves…but whether north or south…fall is a favorite time of year for me…I love the cooler weather, the color of the leaves, Thanksgiving, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin bars…you get my drift here…fall is wonderful…

Dewpoint is a strange character…our dewpoint has been in the high 70’s all summer…that is why the A/C has been on continually since May…dewpoint, it is the amount of moisture in the air…it tells how uncomfortable it will be…in the 40’s, very comfortable…the 50’s, very nice…the 60’s, still okay but getting uncomfortable…the 70′, tropical and uncomfortable…that is where we have been all summer…high 90’s and high 70’s…brutal…glad for 74 today, with dewpoint in the 40’s…you just can’t imagine what a gift this is…I love it…even though the natives had on their long pants, hoodies tied tight around their necks…and called it “cold”…it was wonderful…in Minnesota, many summer mornings are much like this…so I love it…

Butterflies…they are so beautiful…I love them…around our flowers…along the side of the road…just anywhere…and this time of year…they are on the move…when we were in Minnesota the end of August…you can tell fall is coming shortly…we were watching one of our granddaughters playing soccer…she is quite good…and it was fun watching her play…but as I watched from my car…once in a while a Monarch butterfly would flutter by…they didn’t seem to be in a hurry…you know how butterfly’s fly…not a straight line, but flit here and there…they wander…going somewhere but not in a hurry…from one plant to another, one flower to another…

But I know enough about Monarchs to know in Minnesota, in late August…those few Monarchs I saw are all heading to Mexico…it will take them some time to get there flying that fast and stopping along the way, feeding on this flower and that…but they do get there…Monarchs are different than birds, for example…I mean there is that same “drive” to go to their spot in Mexico…but they don’t form flocks and head south as birds do…they individually have the urge to go to a spot in Mexico that they have never been…no “experienced” Monarch to lead them…in fact it was perhaps two or three generations ago that one of their ancestors came north from that spot…but somehow it is imprinted in their DNA or something to go back to that place…now to me, that is amazing…there is lots, we don’t know…but we can marvel…and I marvel at most of nature…no doubt God’s planning involved…

Along the way to Mexico the Monarchs need food…so do other butterflies…so it’s not only Monarchs but other butterflies travel along similar routes…I don’t know how much you notice the number of wildflowers along the road when you drive…the interstates, country roads, and highways across the country, all have their own flowers this time of year…but also fields, even home gardens are all feeding places for butterflies and other of natures living creatures…late last fall we went to Magazine Mountain, a state park in Arkansas…it is beautiful place…and along the road to get there…through small towns and countryside were flowers…an abundance of flowers…I didn’t know what they were, being relatively new to the state…but we found out…Tickseed…they are a beautiful flower..not a beautiful name but all the same, great places for migrating butterflies to stop, rest and stock up for the long trip ahead…so that is why the abundance of flowers that time of year…butterflies…and they filled the ditches and sides of the road…

The Monarch pictured above is resting on a Milkweed plant…this is the only plant on which they lay their eggs…but then after the process of metamorphosis, where the larvae turns into a butterfly…it feeds on the Milkweed and other flowers…the Goldenrod is another plant important to the Monarch, as well as other butterflies…they of course are in abundance across the United States…

So, “How about that”…butterflies, dewpoint, Tickseed, and stuff…glad you came along…hope you enjoy this day…so pleasant…and all the other days that come for you…it is such a wonderful life…

  1. What a great post! Monarchs, Tickseed, Milkweed, all are linked together in this miraculous world of ours. I am amazed at the Monarch migration, such a small creature with filmy wings to travel such a distance.

    Enjoy the season, Jim!
