“Quigley Down Under”…And Angels, Hosts Of Them…

Just this week, after hearing about trials and troubles that people very close to us and others not so close, were having…and after hearing “just one more” story of trouble happening to good people…I wrote this note (and put it on my desk to think about later)...”no doubt Satan is trying to kill us…he roams about seeking whom he may devour”…and I continued, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 4:22-23)”…

And then I read a blog which talked about the thought of “embracing our troubles”…it is hard sometimes to see God’s hand in our lives in times of “trouble”…My “Good ol’ Minnesota Scandinavian (with a little Irish mixed in) philosophy/humor, directly from my Mother, comes into play here…she would say, in times of trouble, “It could be worse.”…and though it may add some humor to difficulty…there is some truth there (her sayings were like that)…and gives us reason to go on…the real truth is…life hands us trouble…and God gives us His mercy, compassion and grace…and they are new every morning…we need to “embrace our troubles today”…not only does it reveal Jesus in us…but shows God is holding us “up”, protecting us from being consumed by the trouble that surrounds us…

“We are loved with an everlasting love, (Jeremiah 31:3) “and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (Deuteronomy 33:27)…(Elisabeth Elliot always says)

Surrounded by trouble…that smacks of the story of Elisha in II Kings 6…where Elisha is surrounded by the Syrian army…his servant cried out, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”…and Elisha replied, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”…then the servant’s eyes were opened and he saw that “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around” (6:15-17)…the Lord’s army was at hand…though we cannot see them with our natural eyes, the Lord of Hosts is watching over us…sending us help whenever He wishes…

Now how does “Quigley Down Under” fit in here…well, let’s see…for those of you who have not seen the film…Quigley, an American cowboy has been hired to come to Australia to work for a nefarious landowner (Marston) who, unbeknown to Quigley…wants Quigley (who is a rifleman that can hit a target at extraordinary distances)…to eradicate the native Aborigines…this is not only immoral but illegal…but Quigley’s possible “boss” has this “arrangement” with the local British military police…the idea is abhorrent to Quigley…and the film is off and running from there…

At the very end of the film, Quigley and Marston (the man who brought him to Australia) have their showdown…and after Quigley dispatches Marston at the end of the film, Marston’s Aboriginal servant comes out and gives Quigley his rifle and he walks off, stripping off his western-style clothing as he goes…

Quigley’s last foe is the the British Major…the official who had the “arrangement” with Marston…as Quigley stands there, after the gunfight…the major arrives with his troops…they encircle Quigley…I could not find the clip (let me update this…I “did” find the clip of this scene, so click on the link and see if it works for you…either way then go on with the post)

where the Major and his troops are threatening Quigley with death…either by hanging or a bullet…but all of the sudden the music changes…a wind comes up…”Aboriginal music” is heard…all is quiet as they all slowly look up and finally see thousands of Aboriginals lining the hills and mountains surrounding the ranch, the troops…and of course, Quigley…it is a “gotcha” moment…and the Major and his troops quickly rethink their position and quietly depart…leaving Quigley safe and sound…

It no doubt has, Elisha and II Kings 6 written all over it…and as in so many other films…ideas used in a movie come from literature…this time maybe it was the Bible…to capture a moment…and no doubt, if you have seen the movie, it certainly does what it is suppose to here…the protagonist is in mortal danger…and help comes from an unexpected place, almost supernatural…and finally “all” have the “eyes” to see the salvation that is so evident…if only they would look up and recognize it…

Aah yes, acquiring awareness of the spiritual realm around us…and if we would catch a glimpse, it would change our attitude…build our faith…it would help us embrace our troubles…because help is not far away…He is the Lord of Glory, He wants us to acknowledge that…even if that is the sum of what we do…
