Arkansas River…Schools…Buses…Jimmy John’s…And A Fish Hatchery…

Oh my…such a title for a post…but it was just that…(Well, the school deal is a freebie…just a few words on that)…but Jeremy had today off from work…and we decided to head out for a short road trip…about an hour away (meeting one criteria to be a road trip) to see a state fish hatchery…Jeremy loves to fish and we thought it would be a fun and interesting trip..well, to put in a nutshell, we were underwhelmed…but since we love road trips…seeing the trees, flowers and spring…seeing how other people live and where they live…so, under or overwhelmed…we enjoyed ourselves…

We took off, after Cracker Barrel Pancakes, Cracker Barrel maple syrup, breakfast sausage links and eggs…all this at home mind you…Cracker Barrel Pancake mix is the greatest…we started to buy the mix after we paid a lot of money for pancakes there and started to make them at home…so after we feasted on that breakfast, off we went past the new school…oops, I mentioned school…in my former life I spent almost 40 years in and about school…I suppose I could even count when I attended school…because I have found most people are experts on schools and how they should be run…because, like me, they went to school once…

But it is true, we spent a lot of time in school as we grow up and most of us have ideas, from that experience, that can help us see how schools should work…and those ideas are so different based on the experience we have had in school…if all went well, then we think school should be like our experience…or if the opposite or somewhere in between…we think another way…so as I went by “our school” this morning (I say “our school” because it is right over the back fence from our house (that seems close but really we don’t even know it’s there)…built just last year…so we saw it from start to finish…

In the morning, for about an hour before school starts, cars line up to drop kids off…in and out they go…and in the afternoon, just before school is over, the same cars come and line up to pick those same kids up…in and out they go…and day after day this happens…in Minnesota, buses lined up by the curb, not cars, to pick up kids…I don’t think I remember hundreds of cars picking up elementary kids at school…very few buses here in Little Rock…and with all the private schools…I think most kids, in Little Rock, ride in cars to school…not buses…I’m not sure that Judie and I, if we had it to do over, would not have transported our kids to school…what with all the problems that buses have (I always have said, “Buses have ruined education.”)…and what goes on when on the bus…I think we would have opted for driving them to school…I think most in Little Rock have decided the same…because most do that very thing…

Well, after passing “our school”…and on a bit, we drove over the Arkansas River…it is impressive (if we were not impressed with the fish hatchery, we always are impressed with the Arkansas River)…the river is very wide here in Little Rock…it is beautiful…and the I-430 bridge is different than a lot of bridges, it has low enough guard rails, and they are “see thru”, so you don’t feel like you are going through a tunnel…you can “see” the river…I will add a picture taken out our car window this morning…it is a beautiful view…the Arkansas starts in Colorado, then into Kansas, Oklahoma, flows across all of Arkansas…and ultimately into the Mississippi River in Southeast Arkansas…so I guess we saw some Rocky Mountain water this morning…

After looking at that picture…and when I look at rivers…especially these wide, expansive rivers…like the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Arkansas and others…can you stop and look, really look and not think of Mark Twain…and Huck Finn…can you not see yourself on that river on a raft…and have the time to just float down that river, in let say, 1860 or so (or pretend it is 1860 or so)…what an adventure…there is just something about a river…

Okay, so our trip to the fish hatchery was a bust…what of it…we found a Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich shop…in North Little Rock…it was a little bit of home, so to speak…we had them in Minnesota…they are so good…all three of us had a whole one (I am trying to stay away from a “whole one of anything”…but it was great)…so we settled into an entire Jimmy John’s experience…it topped off a wonderful road trip…though we got to cross over the I-430 bridge once again and see the Arkansas River from another perspective…hope you enjoyed it too…school stop and all…

We left the mountains of Little Rock, followed the Arkansas River for a while and then dropped down onto the Delta…a region of Arkansas that is as flat as Little Rock is mountainous…from never seeing anything straight and flat to drive on…to seeing for miles along a straight, flat road, which if followed long enough, we would end up in the Mississippi River…the Delta, they call it…flat, rich farm land that reaches out for miles and miles…this is a great country…in reading the memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant and his campaign along the Mississippi…the area of Eastern Arkansas is well represented…and described as it is even today…

America, so full of history…so beautiful…I love it…
