Where Is Everybody Goin’???…

It occurred to me just this morning as I perused the Minneapolis paper online that the Great Minnesota Get-Together…the Minnesota State Fair begins this week…on Thursday, August 26 and runs through Labor Day, September 6…it is a wonderful 12 day fair…and let me tell you something you may not believe…school in Minnesota cannot start until the Fair is over…

Does that give you a slight understanding of how BIG this fair is??? (meaning how important)…now teachers do report before the fair but school itself will not start until after Labor Day…no, no…it’s not just a “thing”…it’s a state law…it’s been argued and debated over the years…but no school until after Labor Day…

This is not just your run-of-the-mill state fairs…in your state you may say…a few rides, some food, a vendor or two…but “Hold up school until after “this” is over??? Unbelievable.”…and you would be right…most state fairs are dull affairs (pardon the pun)…but the Minnesota State Fair is different…320 acres of fair…gates open at 6:00 in the morning…until 10:00 at night and the fair closes at 12:00…attendance at the fair last year was 1,790,497 a new record…that makes it about 149,000 average everyday…it may be 320 acres but it gets crowded…and line ups for pronto pups, Sweet Martha’s Cookies, all the ice cold milk you can drink, for a $1…well, there are line ups everywhere…pork chops on a stick…everything on a stick…fried candy bars, bacon dipped in chocolate on a stick…foot long hot dogs…and the food building…it’s so hot in there and people stacked in cheek to jowl…many are there for the fried cheese curds…and Tom Thumb donuts and a thousand other food items…Oh, did I mention the Corn Roast…huge cobs of corn, roasted to perfection with the husks on…then pealed back and dipped in butter…great to share…the list goes on…

The fair was first of all dominated by agricultural exhibits and competition to encourage farming and though agriculture is still the primary focus, the scope of activities has broadened to entertainment, technology and industrial exhibits…educational and governmental exhibits…not one politician running or “in office” can afford to “skip” the fair or do it at his/her peril…radio and TV stations move their operations to the fair grounds for those 12 days…all news programs come from the fair…and many of the regular daytime programs originate from there…lets just say “It’s A Big Deal”…

Free entertainment is all over the grounds…10 plus stages with free entertainment…everything from the Minnesota State Fair Amateur Talent contest…winners from all the county fairs in Minnesota…they come to the state fair to compete and win…music of all kinds emanates from anywhere you go…

Another kind of entertainment is the many venues selling every known and unknown contraption, cleaner, jewelry, carpet, knives, bread boards,  shoes, trucks and cars and a thousand other much needed items by someone I’m sure…I have taken a few items home over the years…

If you live in the Midwest and haven’t been to the fair, you have missed one of the best parts of summer in Minnesota…the rides, the food, people watching…great for all ages, children, teens, adults and seniors…it has something for everyone…come hungry, leave happy…(’cause you know???…winter is just a stone’s throw away)…Minnesotans enjoy the Minnesota Great Get-Together more because of that looming fact of life…

  1. It is a Great Fair. I saw Garrison Keillor “A Prairie home companion” show there.
