Let’s Lighten up, Shall We???…

I have a tendency to be online, to read and watch too much about what is going on in our world…in Arkansas and around the world…most of what I see and read is “bad news”…and I need a little respite from all that…so let see…let me lighten up for a while…what shall I look at???…how about nature…birds???…they always fascinate me…music would be good too…but let’s look at the bluebird…

We have always been interested in nature…and we have had bird feeders of all kinds…Jeremy has been the tender of the feeders for many years…when we moved to Arkansas we had to leave most of that behind us…we have a much smaller yard, so we had to make some decisions about what to do…we have a small courtyard outside our covered porch…lots of bushes…and a fence…but very narrow…but we do what we can do…

One of our favorite birds is the bluebird…I remember when I was a young boy, I saw bluebirds all around us…but over the years the Eastern Bluebird number dropped drastically…the open fields and natural cavities in trees just dried up…bluebirds nest and reproduce in cavities of trees for the most part…

Flocks of bluebirds were common across the United States but as Americans migrated across the continent…much of the prairie was transformed and the bluebird population diminished…but the bluebird has a happy comeback…in the 1960’s, bluebird lovers began sounding the alarm…encouraging people to put out bluebird boxes…and through the conservation of thousands of bird lovers, the bluebird has truly made a comeback…(you can notice in the picture, I think, the bluebird box…and maybe see our sunflower seed feeder, two hummingbird feeders and a thistle seed feeder)…

We have tried to do our part…we have been able to attract bluebirds to our yard by putting out a bluebird box…that’s all we have done…what is hard is after bluebirds lay their eggs is to have them hatch and to see those birds fledged…in other words fly away from the nest…but this year with less cats on the loose…less raccoons and less possums around…the bluebirds have successfully hatched two sets of 5 new bluebirds into the wild…that is a great feeling…after watching them closely for a month or so…

It is hard to believe but in that picture of the bluebird babies…there are 5 in there…crunched in that bluebird box…an interesting thing about the bluebird…it may be true of other birds but for sure of this bird…you will notice the inside of the box is clean…when you have 5 little birds in there for about 18 days before they leave…who cleans up???…because all they do is eat and poop…mom and dad bluebird are in and out of the box hundreds of times…they feed all the daylight hours…well, every once in a while when the parents go in…they come out with a white sack…called a fecal sack…and they take it out of the nest and carry it “somewhere”…how that works, how the babies do that…only God knows and planned all that…all human mothers wish that was the way it worked on their babies, I’m sure…

Now don’t you feel better???…I sure do…and with 10 new bluebirds out and around…more to visit next year…and I feel a little lightened up!!!…
