I’m Just Walkin’ in Two Medicine Country…

In past few months I have been following a man named Matt Green as he walks across the country…from Rockaway Beach, New York to Rockaway Beach, Oregon…in other words, coast to coast…it has been a joy for me (and others who have followed him on his site) as he runs into people, situations and things which are at the same time wonderful, beautiful and exciting… yet sometimes  befuddling (loving that word)…the website is  http://www.imjustwalkin.com

He is now in the middle of Montana…West of Glendive and East of Great Falls…(that is a lot of territory)…now to many that is not the middle of Montana…that is in the middle of nowhere…well, I have never believed that…and that is because you would need to talk to the people who live there…they would tell you different…and Matt has found that out…there is so much beauty and grandeur in that part of the country…”real people” live there, as I like to describe them…and they live all across this country…real people doing real things…not maybe like “we do”…but like “they do”…I love that…hope you do too…

Now this is an alert…as I have followed him…I seemed to remember a “trilogy” of books that I read back a few years ago…they were wonderful…Ivan Doig is the author…he was born and raised in Montana and writes about Montana…the books???…

1. “Dancing at the Rascal Fair”…it was written second…but it is a prequel to the first…I recommend reading this first…it takes place in the Two Medicine Country…that Matt will be coming to in a short time…it takes place in the 1880’s and beyond…two friends coming from Scotland to America…settling the area at the foot of the Rockies…

2. “English Creek”…same family, just later…still in the Two Medicine Country…Jick at 14 looking for his place in the family…it’s now during the depression and growing up at that time…characters are wonderful…situations in the family where they reached a place…”where all four of our lives made their bend”…

3. “Ride With Me, Mariah Montana”…here again is Jick…and Doig brings us to Montana’s centennial summer 1989…(we know that from the barn that Matt took a picture of on his walk)…his daughter, Mariah, talks him into crisscrossing the state in a Winnabago…Jick, Mariah and her ex-husband, newspaperman, Riley…it makes for a wonderful story…a tour of the state and surprising ending…like all of Doig’s books…

So, if you are following Matt across Montana…one or all of these books you will love…once you start one they “drag you in”…they are great books…I urge you to get one and begin to read as Matt arrives in Two Medicine Country…
