Gambling…Oh, You Betcha…

This one of the (many, I guess) things in our modern day culture that just turn me off…I guess it comes from my fundamental Baptist background and upbringing…but it just grinds me…people, and mostly people who can’t afford it, throw away money they could use for themselves or their family…or save for a “rainy day”…or just save for something they may want later…

Sidebar…The title of the post is a bit of a joke…”you betcha” is a Minnesota phrase meaning “yes, I agree”…in this case to be taken as a joke…”tongue-in-cheek”…gambling…”oh, ya, what a joke”…end Sidebar…

Our culture of course doesn’t value that today…”get it now”…”take it now”…”don’t count the costs”…”just go for it”…it is a vacuous argument…and here in Arkansas they just passed the lottery the past year…and the selling point was…all proceeds go to college scholarships…that sounds so good…but just another tax…and mostly on the backs of those who can’t afford it…

In my book (remembering my background) taking something bad and trying to make it look good…i.e. gambling (bad) linked to scholarships (good)…just a trick to fool those who see gambling and the things that surround it, as bad…to accept gambling for the “good” that may come from it…and so our little lottery within one year has grown by numerous games and add-ons…and now more and more they are luring more and more people into this charade…that somehow you “will” win something for nothing…and in a few years with the “money” not coming in like it did in the beginning, they will have to do something else to raise that money…and it will add to the “woes” of our culture…it happens everywhere it has been tried…

Sidebar…David in I Chronicles 13 and 15 learned the hard way what doing the “right thing in the wrong way” brings…and what doing the “right thing in the right way” brings…end sidebar…

But I think what should be taught in our culture and especially to our children…is debt is one of the major problems in families today…(and in our government today)…and if you want something that costs money…you should work and pay for it…to control the urge to spend money you don’t have, though all around you the culture says differently…that is hard but it is right…

Okay…you may not agree with my less than compelling arguments so lets go a little “lighter” and watch a video from “Guys and Dolls”…and this whole post was started after reading a post on PowerLine this morning…about it being the 100th anniversary of Frank Loesser’s birth…to celebrate that…here is the Loesser written opening  song of “Guys and Dolls”: “Fugue For Tinhorns”…and it shows the “perfect logic” of this trio of gamblers…each boasting that he’s got “the horse right here.”…great song, fun musical…lousy way of living…
