Strawberries…Shortcake and Stuff…

There is cheering in Mudville today…UPS just delivered our Mancini LongHots…now that would bring joy to anyone!!!…that should keep us in that delectable and nosh-able delicacy, for a few weeks…oh, yes LongHots have caught on in the Elmquist house…

But that is not what this post is about…this is about strawberries…I stopped for probably our last flat of strawberries for the year…though she will keep coming until they are all gone…they are beautiful aren’t they…I have a couple of other pictures…but isn’t this a great way to market them…they bring them in white buckets and they pour them out on one of these cardboard boxes…what a wonderful way to see them…she pours them out right before your eyes…so there is no wondering…”I wonder what’s at the bottom of this bucket?”…you see them all…she said this is the last week of the berries…so we go about everyday and pick up a fresh supply…homemade jam, strawberries over cereal, whole frozen strawberries, strawberries and cream…and last night we had for the second time “Roasted Strawberry Shortcake”…don’t doubt your eyes…it is wonderful…

When you roast them in the oven the red is redder…and they are sweeter as well…it is so good…I think Judie put her recipe on Facebook…it is worth the look and the taste…

I mentioned that this was about the END of our strawberry season…it is the third week in May…we are not used to this, of course…in Minnesota strawberries come sometime in June…depending on the weather it could be the middle or the end of June…it is a cool weather plant…but the frost needs to be out of the ground first and the ground needs to warm up, and that is iffy in Minnesota…so we learned to wait…and in this case those in the Northern tier of states will enjoy them when for us it is only a memory!!!…so enjoy…

There is nothing like YOUR home state local strawberries…I have had Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida and Arkansas strawberries…they are all good…there is something about home grown…they seem sweeter, fresher than bought in the store berries…so when in a few days or weeks you see a sign like this along the road…stop!!!…there is enjoyment beyond imagination…

But there is one thing about seeing the strawberry season ending…about the middle of June when Minnesota may expect strawberries…the lady in the picture will be back at her spot…with…the first of the peaches…hard to believe that peaches are now growing as we speak…there are many varieties grown in Arkansas…so we will have fresh peaches most of the summer…and home grown tomatoes start about the middle of June too…that is a little more iffy…but in June for sure…

It is amazing what a few hundred miles will do for the growing season…well, I’m going to go find the last of the leftover “Roasted Strawberry Shortcake”…if someone else hasn’t found it first…

“Next on my list” of food items…a special post on Blackberries…that’s tomorrow…see you then…

  1. Strawberries in CA are the best. We had them from mid Feb until June or July. This season is too short? We picked 8 quarts today. Yummy!

  2. I don’t think that I have ever heard of roasted strawberries. I will have to experiment with some when ours start producing. We have a lot of blossoms in our patch, but won’t get any for awhile.

    • Cheryl…we never heard of it either until we saw it in our local paper…then we looked online and there are all kinds of recipes…the one Judie used the second time is in the link below…the strawberry part of both recipes is the same…the shortcake is different…but we liked this one…in fact it raised a bit more so easier to split…but the strawberries are so “red” and the juice is so “red” too…and so sweet…you can serve them hot or cold…I preferred them cold…the whipped cream is great too…it stands up so high…

You will enjoy this recipe…and as you will see it is wonderful, sweet and full flavored…I couldn’t believe this could be that good…the strawberries will be soft, because they are “cooked”…but that difference is surpassed by the flavor, color and taste…I think you will enjoy them…
