Potholes, Prairie and Spring Fever…

It is on the cusp of spring here in Little Rock…(“on the cusp”…another great phrase in the English language…don’t ya think???)…anyway, spring is just around the corner…things are budding here…I haven’t seen many spring flowers yet…although the pansies planted last October are doing just fine…(for a Minnesotan that seems unlikely…but it is true…they bloomed all winter…snow, cold…amazing)…but the daffodils are “up” and I have seen some tulips “up”…can Iris’ be far behind…

I love new beginnings, in nature and in life…and we are about to see them all over the country…with the last of the winter snow storms coming and going…it does happen at this time of year in parts of the country but the snow goes so fast…and there is not the idea that it will be around for months to come…and peeking up through all that snow will be crocus’ and daffodils and tulips…and we can begin to plan our summer…vacations and summer activities…

And the fact that it is a beautiful day here…in the high 60’s and maybe 70…so it will be nice…the Bradford Pear trees are about to pop with their beautiful blooms…

There are so many blossoming trees and bushes here in the spring…in fact almost every month of the year…and it is about to start in earnest in the next few days…can’t wait…

Ahhh,  okay Mr. E, so we have the “Spring Fever” part of the title of this blog…what about the rest …you know the “Potholes, Prairie”…Sincerely, The Committee for Truth in Blogging Stuff…

Okay, I know I am a bit wordy but I am not quite done with the “Spring Fever” part…cuz it leads to the “Potholes, Prairie” part of it…

Above my desk…I’m looking at it now…is a framed print…by Terry Redlin…that’s “Red-lin”…many of you will know him…he from Watertown, South Dakota, a wonderful painter of wildlife but also of Americana…this was a gift to me when I retired called, what else, “Spring Fever”…I have always loved it…see what you think…(click for a larger view)…

Maybe you have been to his museum in Watertown…it holds over 150 Redlin original oil paintings and more…it is in eastern South Dakota…north of Sioux Falls and Brookings…it is free and if you go to the internet site it will tell you about it…it’s free and it looks wonderful…maybe that will be in our plans for this summer…maybe yours…

That painting is a romantic but realistic painting from the prairie…and it is about kids fishing and flying kites and just hanging around a South Dakota “pothole”…potholes are found all across the midwest…from Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota and on into Canada…most of those potholes have been taken out for farmland but there is a movement to save them and return as many as possible…these potholes, leftover from the glaciers, filled up with water and are breeding grounds for all kinds of wildfowl…and fish abound in them too…Judie has one of Redlin’s prints called “Spring Fishing”…with children fishing in the spring…I think 12 of them…in Judie’s eyes, our 12 grandchildren…it hangs over the fireplace…

The drive across North and South Dakota have many of them yet…and they are so beautiful…like diamonds glistening on the wide expanse of prairie…and this is where I am this morning…come with me…out on the prairie…you too can see the potholes…and kids around them…fishing…flying kites…playing…it’s where you really want to be on this Sunday afternoon…

It’s called Spring Fever…all of us can get it…there is no cure…no shot…in fact we all want it…to live our childhood dreams of those early spring days…outside without a jacket for the first time in months…and Mom saying, “Put something on so you won’t catch cold.”

Ahh, Mr. E…don’t do it…don’t tell that old joke about what a sweater is…you know…a sweater is what your Mom tells you to put on when ‘she’s’ cold.” Sincerely, The Committee to Stop the Telling of Worn-out Jokes…

Okay, I won’t…
