O What a Beautiful Day…

It’s the final phrase in the song “O What a Beautiful Morning”…from the Broadway and film musical, “Oklahoma!”…(and don’t forget to put the (!) exclamation point in the title)…

Sidebar…Richard Rogers, of Rogers and Hammerstein fame, was the composer of the famous team…he didn’t look like a composer…more like a British businessman, impeccably tailored…but he was also a perfectionist about his music…his songs were to be sung as written…and the “never forget the exclamation point” in the title “Oklahoma!”, was as important to him as hitting every note as written…

And who can forget his score to “Victory at Sea”…which is still being run on television after 56 years…I have the DVD and the musical score…it is marvelous…(and if you can’t remember any of the music from “Victory at Sea”…I will send some along…you knew that was coming)…

There is so much more about Richard Rogers…but…End Sidebar…

Anyway, that song epitomizes today in Little Rock, AR…it is a beautiful day…we had snow on the ground, if you can imagine, up to yesterday…and if you look hard you can still see some on the North side of buildings…if you look on the North side of the mountains, the ground still has some white on it…as you look through the bare trees…but on the whole it is gone…

It is about 55 degrees out there and it feels a lot warmer…there is a light wind out of the Southwest which brings warmer air…and the sun is out in all it’s glory…so we cleaned the car today…washed the  windows…it was just so wonderful outside…we may still get a little winter I suppose but I am planning for spring whether it comes right away or not…

My Dad use to say, “Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning. Red sky at night, sailors delight.”  (and I always thought this came from his time in the Navy…when he was in the Pacific during WWII…I could just see, and still do, the brilliant red sky across the beautiful Pacific…in the morning or the evening and see the sailors taking to heart the truth of that saying )…the truth is I have always said that when I see a red sky…morning or evening…and took to heart that saying…and you would be surprised how often it turned out that way…in fact if you google it, you will find the science to the saying…  01 – The Song of the High Seas (thought this would be a good place to put some Victory at Sea music…enjoy)

But did you know that Jesus said the same thing as he was rebuking the Pharisees…how is that you ask?…Matthew 16:2-3 “He replied, ‘When evening comes, you say, ‘Today it will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.”

These men understood the natural, so they could discern the skies…but could not understand the spiritual…the Pharisees were asking Jesus to show them a sign from heaven…and Jesus told them they understood nothing spiritual…that there would be no special sign given to them…”And he left them, and departed.”

So on this beautiful day…music, sunshine, a little scripture, a little history…and as I look out the window…it looks like a beautiful red sunset getting ready for us…what was that again…”Red sky at night”…what a fitting day…”O What a Beautiful Day”…
