Sledding or Sliding???…

I suppose it doesn’t really matter…we called it sliding when I was young in Minnesota…in Arkansas they call it sledding…

Sliding: to move smoothly along a surface…to coast over snow or ice…

Sledding: to ride on a sled…

I like sliding…the meaning has a little “more to it”…I do have to give it to you though “to ride on a sled”…does say it all…but if you have “moved smoothly along a surface, coasting over snow”…now that has a little extra something…but whatever, sliding or sledding, there has been lots of it going on in Little Rock…

In Minnesota, because of the chances of snow in winter…every family most likely has sleds, a toboggan, skis, etc…all the rather inexpensive “sliding” gear…because you will use it most winters…here in Little Rock, ingenuity is important…most people do not have such equipment…so out come the ever present cardboard boxes…a sharp knife to cut the box and a hill of any size…and you have a wonderful time ahead…

The snow has lasted more than a week in Little Rock…it has been unseasonably cold…staying below freezing for a long time…it has been above 32 degrees for the last couple of days…but there is still slush on the roads and the snow is covering the ground…so parents and kids have been out on the hills around here “sliding” up a storm…

Even in Minnesota, when we were young…we used cardboard…and down the hill we would go…it is a fast trip…and we would go until the cardboard wore right out…tattered in pieces and scattered all over the hill…and I have seen it around where we live in Arkansas…

I know this is some kind of record that the snow has lasted this long…we have had colder weather and when the snow came, it stayed…most people I have asked say this is unusual…in fact most can’t remember snow lasting this long…as I look out the window, I see snow on the roofs of the neighbors…the lawns are covered…and as I look at the mountains around us, there is snow all over…in the 3 years we have been here, we have had a little snow once or twice but it was gone the next day…and cold days (below 32 degrees) are usually followed by 50’s, 60’s and sometime 70’s…so this is unexpected…

But for the kids it has been wonderful…and snow is fun…to those out East and those in the North who just want it to go away…I have just one thing to say…enjoy it…it is fun…and soon it will be gone and some other kind of weather, we can complain about, will be here soon enough…
